Chen Ruo Bing

English Version

Chen Ruo Bing’s paintings emerge from a carefully calibrated balance of colour, light, form and void. Against quietly structured fields of colour, simple, often softly rounded forms appear, oscillating between surface and volume, proximity and distance. Thin, translucent layers of paint allow the texture of the canvas to remain visible, creating a depth that is atmospheric rather than illusionistic. Form and ground remain inseparably connected: at times, a coloured form stands out clearly; at others, it seems almost to dissolve into the surrounding light. This deliberate reduction slows the gaze, attuning it to the subtlest shifts in tone, density and space. In this quiet yet intense painting, the traditions of Chinese ink painting meet impulses from European modernism and American Color Field painting. Light is not merely a pictorial effect; it becomes a vehicle for movement, perception and inward contemplation.

Born in China in 1970, Chen Ruo Bing studied Chinese painting at the Zhejiang Academy of Arts in Hangzhou from 1988 to 1991 and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1992 to 1998, where his teachers included Gotthard Graubner. In 1993, he received the Advancement Award of the Hedwig and Robert Samuel Foundation; in 2000, he participated in the Artist-in-Residence Programme of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut. Chen Ruo Bing lives and works in Düsseldorf.
